Portable Oxygen

Freedom and Mobility

Portable oxygen systems allow you to leave home for a few hours, days or even weeks. That means you are free to go on your daily walks, out for errands, visit friends or take that next big vacation.

Careica Health's home oxygen professionals will recommend the equipment that best meets your health and lifestyle needs.

Portable oxygen equipment is available for purchase or rent, and includes:

Portable Oxygen Cylinders

Portable Oxygen Cylinders

These are small tanks of compressed oxygen that you carry using cylinder shoulder bags or carts. Attaching an oxygen regulator ensures you get the oxygen flow your doctor prescribed.

Cylinders require frequent changes, so you need to plan ahead to ensure you have enough cylinders when traveling.

Oxygen Conserving Devices (OCDs)

These devices help your portable oxygen cylinders last up to six times longer, which reduces the number of refills and increases the amount of time you can spend outside your home on just a single cylinder.

OCDs work by ensuring oxygen is only released when you breathe in, rather than having a continuous flow.

Portable Oxygen Cylinders

Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs)

These concentrators extract oxygen from the air around you then compress and purify it before delivering concentrated oxygen directly to you.

They are the size of a small suitcase, run on batteries and can weigh less than five pounds. Unlike portable oxygen cylinders, they never need refills.

Diagnosing and Prescribing Your Oxygen

Your doctor will only prescribe oxygen after completing tests to diagnose your respiratory disease. For those in the Calgary area, these tests may occur at Careica Health's Pulmonary Function Lab.
